The 10 Best Cookbooks of 2022

Our Favorite Cookbooks of 2022
Simply Recipes / Andy Christensen

2022 was another great year for cookbooks and a rewarding one for those that eagerly anticipate them. Eric Kim, a writer beloved by many for his sentimental and deeply moving storytelling released his first cookbook, Korean American. Illyana Maisonet's Diasporican joined the helm of the too-few Puerto Rican cookbooks. Then there were happy discoveries like Lowcountry recipes from Emily Meggett—the matriarch of Edisto Island and descendent of enslaved Gullah people—in Gullah Geechee Home Cooking. And Hannah Che's The Vegan Chinese Kitchen, which taught me that vegan cooking is inherently part of my Buddhist roots, even if I don't identify as vegan.

The cookbooks we love teach us about life as much as food. They change the way we see ourselves, the world, and the way we cook, for the better. Here are the 10 cookbooks we are most proud to add to our bookshelves from 2022.

Psst! Cookbooks make great gifts!

Korean American: Food That Tastes Like Home

"Eric Kim has quickly become one of my favorite recipe developers over the past few years. His recipes feel purposeful and personal, and with Korean American this thoughtfulness is on full display. Each of the sections in the book tells a story: “Garden of Jean” is about his mother’s vegetable garden, and “Feasts” is about acknowledging “the simple act of being alive.” I love when food and cooking can do that. And of course it also doesn’t hurt that everything Kim creates is just absolutely delicious—from his Sesame-Soy Deviled Eggs to Milk Bread with Maple Syrup. It’s just all so highly cookable." Diasporican: A Puerto Rican Cookbook

Ilyanna Maisonet shares a story in her new cookbook, Diasporican, about her family making pasteles wrapped in foil, instead of the more usual banana leaves—this is very controversial for stark traditionalists. "When you think of my grandma coming to Sacramento as a seventeen-year-old mother of two in 1956, you have to wonder where the hell she would have found banana leaves in Northern California?! Grandma kept calm, used what was ready available—aluminum foil—and carried on." This is the sensible, unapologetic, and very funny spirit I want to espouse in my cooking, and it's what draws me to Maisonet's stories and recipes.

The Woks of Life: Recipes to Know and Love from a Chinese American Family: A Cookbook

"I've followed the titular blog for a couple of years. With this cookbook, the Leung family open their proverbial doors to share recipes that celebrate their multigenerational family heritage. Laced into the seven chapters are a multitude of lovely nuggets, such as bottle gourd art, an image of Judy's aunt's secret sauce recipe in its original text, and recipe titles in English, Mandarin, and romanized Mandarin. It's as much a Leung family anthology as it is a cookbook. The recipes are a joy to cook and the writing helps me to appreciate the depth of what I am making." Munni Pramanik, Contributor

Justice of the Pies: Sweet and Savory Pies, Quiches, and Tarts + Inspirational Stories from Exceptional People

Maya-Camille Broussard has been baking the world a better place long before I got my hands on her first cookbook, Justice of the Pies, named after her beloved Chicago-based bakery. I've made the Hummingbird Tarte Tatin, a deeeeeeply caramelized upside-down pineapple and banana tart with a flaky store-bought puff pastry—it's as delicious as it sounds. For a bakery cookbook, I'd say she does a phenomenal job making it feel approachable for mere mortals like me. I'm this close to booking a trip to Chicago to enjoy her treats in person.

Gullah Geechee Home Cooking: Recipes from the Matriarch of Edisto Island

"Growing up, my family traveled to Edisto Island for one week every summer. It's a special place full of special people and delicious Lowcountry food, and Emily Meggett is the deserved matriarch. We were only ever lucky visitors—the Gullah community there is so rich and beautiful, and this book is a testament to that. I gave this book to my mother and she practically hugged it—the recipes, stories, and photos of Edisto bring her so much joy." —Laurel Randolph, Editor

What's for Dessert: Simple Recipes for Dessert People

Claire Saffitz's second cookbook, What's for Dessert, was on my list of most anticipated cookbooks released in fall 2022 and it delivered. Admittedly, I used to be intimidated by Saffitz. Harvard grad! Nerdy food historian! Queen of precision baking! Yet after hanging out with her cookbook in the kitchen, I've come to intimately see her genius in a warmer light. Her recipes work, I can make them, and they are always delicious—what more would you want from a baking book?

The Vegan Chinese Kitchen: Recipes and Modern Stories from a Thousand-Year-Old Tradition

I am grateful for Hannah Che's identity crisis after becoming vegan and questioning her Chinese roots because it led her to write The Vegan Chinese Kitchen, a cookbook where the storytelling is as good as the food. Che spent a few years traveling across China, learning about it's rich vegan traditions, and training as a chef at the only professional vegetarian culinary school in the country—the cookbook is at once a travelogue, a textbook, a memoir, and gorgeous coffee table book.
